The
Gospel According to Donnie
Welcome to the
colored section, welcome to the Negro league. Sign your name on the black
list and know this, it's American history. First black this and first black
that. Give me the truth and not the past and no that we are the original people.
The Alpha and Omega of it all but we get the short end of the stick all of
the time.
"The Colored
Section"
- Donnie
Every once in
awhile an artist puts out a definitive work that is so innovative in it's
concept, musicianship, and overall relevance that it is considered to be a
classic. Examples of such classics in the soul genre are "Songs in The
Key of Life" (Stevie Wonder), Extension of a Man (Donny Hathaway), What's
Going On (Marvin Gaye), and more recently The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
(Lauryn Hill) and "Who is Jill Scott" (Jill Scott). With his forthcoming
album titled, "The Colored Section", Donnie has successfully captured
the same spirit and creative genius as the aforementioned artists, and has
delivered a work filled with honesty, integrity, and more importantly, blackness.
In the Colored
Section, Donnie challenges his audience to think. His message is not always
in your face, but in many instances hidden in his lyrics and his gospel influenced
resonance. On the albums' title track, The Colored Section, Donnie speaks
to the contributions of, and the struggles faced, by African-Americans in
America. The end result is a very powerful message that speaks to the injustices
faced by a people that have built the very foundation of a nation. Other album
highlights include, People Person, The 9/11 inspired "Our New National
Anthem" and "Beautiful Me" where Donnie reminds us of the beauty
in being black. Surprisingly, one of the most powerful songs on the album
is the one with the least lyrics. Masterplan is a break-beat masterpiece that
highlights Donnie's spiritual influence and is laced with a simple yet powerful
message about GOD and his masterplan for us all.

The
Colored Section is a journey though black history with a
messagethat is as classic as it is timeless. So, when you
listen to Donnie, never mind that his voice closely resembles
that of Mr. Hathaway himself. Forget about the fact that
you will sometimes find yourself listening to a song over
again because you could not quite capture his message on
the first run. Do accept Donnie for who he is, the next
generation and the future of modern soul music.

UPSCALE MAGAZINE - SUMMER 2002 |
"Listening
to Donnie's music is like taking a swim where the ocean meets the river; while
it's calm surface pacifies the most capricious soul, don't get it twisted, the
undercurrent will pull your a** in. It's a clash of contradictions, a twofold
catharsis of Saturday night's bacchanalia and Sunday's redemption song. In a
word, Donnie's music is the truth."
ONE WORLD - FALL 2002 |
"Destined
to be a modern soul classic"
MUZIK - SUMMER 2001 |
"There
are artists who simply try too hard to show off their complexities and turn
them into a gimmick, but to Donnie his eccentricities don't make him special
as much as they just make him human."
