OK
so you may not have heard this rising superstar before,
but no doubt you’ve listened, maybe even got your
groove on at a club, to some of her songs already. Singer/Songwriter,
D’mello, has proven herself as a prolific songwriter,
penning hits for 3LW and Usher, just to name a couple.
But it was inevitable that this young talent would soon
take center stage and begin performing her own songs.
Currently
residing in New York, D’mello, 21 years old, is
embarking on what is sure to be an exciting career. Her
soon to be released debut album, Best Love Story, on Warner
Bros., is promising to be one of the smoothest and note
worthy albums to be released in 2003. The lead single
and title track, “Best Love Story” features
a guest appearance by New York Hip Hop duo Mobb Deep.
The song tells a tale of love gone wrong. D’mello
is forced to close the final chapter in what was at one
time, the best love story. And although in her song, one
has ended, for D’mello, the story of her musical
journey had only just begun.
D’mello
grew up listening to Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and
Patti LaBelle Their influence is evident by just listening
to the range and soul that she possesses. Yet yearning
for more, she studied opera and operettas during her High
School years and also participated in local musicals and
choirs.
With
the gift of being a vocal powerhouse in hand, D’mello
began to pursue a professional career in music But it
was her writing skills that helped land her big break.
After recognition from industry insiders and a good push
from some key players, she landed a publishing deal. And
so the hits began. Along with her writing partner, Adeka
Stupart, the two completed one hundred songs in almost
a year. Without any surprise, shortly after landing her
publishing deal, the multitalented singer was offered
a record deal with the label that she now calls home,
Warner Bros. At the young age of 21 D’mello has
written songs for Top 10 artists and now had the chance
to make her own Top 10 album.
Assisted
by producers Eddie Hustle, Jay Daniels and Rhemario Webber,
D’mello and Adeka Stupart began the creative process
and would soon give birth to the masterpiece “Best
Love Story”. Love is the overall concept. The highs,
lows and in betweens of love and relationships is what
make up the Best Love Story. Each song on the album are
like chapters of the novel. “Not Over Your Ex”
describes a situation where the girl is in love with a
man who still has feelings for someone from his past,
yet she holds on and tries to make things work. But don’t
think that like many albums it is just a sad ol’
love song type of record. On the flip side from “Not
Over Your Ex”, the song “Honey Baby”
celebrates and rejoices being in a good, healthy and happy
relationship and the special connection she has found
in her man.
So
with all of this love talk, most of the men out there
are probably wondering if D’mello is seeing anyone.
Unfortunately, she is currently involved but that doesn’t
mean she can’t share some intimate moments, through
her music. To listen to her album is to get to know where
she has been, where she is and where she wants to go.
And despite all of the ups and downs she may write about,
this young vital woman knows how to relax and let her
hair down. She enjoys watching movies and really keeping
low key. D’mello also finds pleasure in dining out
with friends, followed by a good ass kicking game of bowling.
That’s right!! Make sure you don’t challenge
D’mello to a game of bowling, cause you might just
get embarrassed. She has become quite a superb player
since she has started but she swears she’s only
in it for fun.
Now
back to work. D’mello has been doing shows nation
wide in support of her forthcoming album and notes her
gig at Howard University as one of her favorites. She
was also recently part of a tour sponsored by Vibe magazine
and has been enjoying every minute. With recent performances
in Philly, DC and at New York’s own Joe’s
Pub, D’mello is known to give a thrilling and impressive
live show. Along with her buddies, Mobb Deep, she also
recently completed the video for the single “Best
Love Story” which has already started airing.
If
first impressions are any indications of things to come,
D’mello will be sure to make history. Heart felt
emotional songs that can be remembered for years to come
is what can be expected from the debut album and the public
is without a doubt ready for some more of that. So check
out D’mello and allow her music to become the soundtrack
to you Best Love Story.
