Just when
you think music has reached an all time low in terms of lyrical content, melodic
structure and just plain damn creativity, a shining light breaks through the
clouds. This shining light is Bilal Oliver.
In
his highly anticipated album, 1st Born Second, Bilal takes you on journey through
over 50 years of music, crossing a wide variety of genres along the way. At
the ripe age of 21, Bilal has accomplished a level of musical maturity that
many artists spend their entire career searching for and yet never find.
Bilal
opens up 1st Born Second with a poetic soliloquy that would make Iceberg Slim
turn in his playa card. He then takes you on a ride through a variety of times
and spaces. From living life on the edge in the Dr. Dre inspired "Fast
Lane" to exploring the debts of his subconscious in "Sometimes".
1st Born Second offers nourishment to those who have been starving for quality
music. For those who dare compare this young musical pioneer with the likes
of Prince, D'Angelo, and others, please don't. Although the influence is apparent,
if you listen closely you will find that this classically trained brother straight
outta Philly has a sound and style uniquely his own and will be a driving force
in the regeneration of soul music.
