COMMENTARY:
SEEK is back with a new album, new vibe and new attitude.
LiquidSoulRadio.com has been long time fans of SEEK and
their musical founder, Freddy Luster. We have regularly
featured their music on our Internet Radio broadcasts
and XM Satellite Radio program, Liquid Soul Elements.
SEEKs
new album, 'Journey Into Day' is a grand mixture
of smooth grooves, jazzy beats and soulful vocals. SEEK
is all about good music and 'Journey Into Day'
is sound evidence of their committment. SEEKs lead singer,
Lisa Terry kicks open the album strong with some smooth
vocals on the first track 'Open The Way'. Tina
Howard and Brad 'Tasty' Hasty keep the vibe strong with
their drum and percussion trance on 'Something Real'.
Our boy, Freddy 'Guitar Pimp' Luster drops some jazzy
grooves on 'Talk About It'.
The
album is solid from start to finish. Life's a
journey... SEEK your own path...

SEEK
is six piece band from Atlanta that fuses classic sounds
with the latest cutting-edge musical nuances. The soulful,
thought-provoking lyrics woven through jazz-inspired grooves
complete a sound that is elegant in its composition, inspirational
in its delivery, and like nothing you've ever heard. The
original songs, from this six-piece band from Atlanta,
will simultaneously move your feet and stir your soul.
In
1999 SEEK independently released their debut album, Venus
and Mars, backed by their hometown venue Yin Yang Music
Café (co-owned by group member Freddy Luster).
This was their first foray into what has been a great
musical journey, allowing them to broaden their horizons,
pick up a few fans, and become a relevant entity within
the burgeoning Atlanta soul scene.
In
2001, as SEEK was writing and recording a new album, their
musical scope expanded and they began releasing 12”
dance singles on Giant Step Records, featuring remixes
by noted producers Ron Trent, Kemeticjust, and Stuart
Matthewman (of Sade). The songs “Surrender”,
“Everafter”, and “The Story of Us”,
were smoothed-out dance floor hits that held true to the
soulful songwriting craft of SEEK, while providing a glimpse
into their depth as a songwriting and production unit.
This move also proved to expand their fan base and gain
notoriety overseas.
In
late 2002, SEEK released their critically acclaimed sophomore
album, Surrender, first in Japan (Village Again Ltd) and
then in the US (Soulestial Elements). It was the perfect
evolution in their musical journey incorporating all of
their 12” singles as well as other classic-sounding
progressive grooves, evoking many elements of the soulful
‘70s with a 21st century twist. This allowed them
to further expand their touring base throughout the US
and Japan.
In 2003, after many performances and life experiences
SEEK retreated to the studio and began writing songs for
a new album, one that would hold true to their musical
journey and encompass all elements of their versatility.
This album, entitled Journey Into Day, would fully express
not only their song writing skills, but also the musical
talent of the multi-instrumentalist producers (Freddy
Luster and Billy Fields) and the growth, both vocally
and lyrically, of lead singer Lisa Terry. Chris Kounelis,
the soulful keyboard player brought in during the making
of “Surrender”, also contributed heavily to
the writing of this new masterpiece, as well as the other
members of the band Brad Hasty and Tina Howard-Fields.
By late summer 2003, the album was complete and immediately
picked up for release, by Village Again Ltd (Japan), and
by Dome Records (UK and Europe).
And
now in 2004, after securing a new relationship with Atlanta
based Brash Music (distributed by ADA), SEEK steps forth
with their 3rd release in the US. Journey Into Day has
received critical acclaim overseas. The thirteen track
CD features some special guest songwriter’s: New
York vocalist/producer Angela Johnson contributed to the
title track and fellow Atlanta musician Paige Lackey -Martin,
who writing credits include songs on Incognito’s
“Who Needs Love” album and India.Arie’s
”Acoustic Soul” album. Also featured on the
album are some special up-tempo remixes including the
Seekronized remix of ‘Right Here’ and the
Tauriva remix of ‘Ever After’. They hold true
to their raw independent style of recording and production.
This album was completely recorded at Freddy’s house
in a bedroom that doubles as their control room, with
the closet as a vocal booth, running wires throughout
the house. Many events, both personal and global, provided
the inspirational backdrop for the material. Lyrically,
Lisa Terry describes these songs as a continuation of
the “danceable lullabies” from Surrender.
“In general, our songs are about realizing your
destiny and surrendering to it, whether it’s life,
love, or your search for something to believe in”,
says Lisa.
Freddy Luster (guitarist/produce) adds, “We try
to stay true to ourselves. But our influences are pretty
diverse, from Sade to the Isley Brothers to Carole King
to Everything But the Girl to Seal to Jamiroquai and the
Brand New Heavies. What I like about those artists is
that they all have a unique ability to weave through musical
genres and stand alone in their own box. I think music
like that may not always sell the most records, but it
makes great impact on the musical landscape. We’re
also heavily influenced by the soulful house genre. ”
Standing
out from the tepid background of modern music, SEEK crosses
the lines of traditional music genres conforming to only
one niche: good music. Come stand at that legendary crossroad
between the music of yesterday, today and tomorrow as
all roads converge at a single point in time. Experience
SEEK, and find the music your soul has been searching
for.
