When two unconventional
minds, both of whom share a love for music and the arts, came together in
2000 as a musical duo, it resulted in Atlanta-based Slick & Rose, a dynamic
pairing whose vocal ability and writing skill provide a pleasant mixture of
sass and class. They may be different in their backgrounds, but these sirens
agree that those influences have led them to music and each other. A true
Southerner, Nikki Slick, or "Slick," counts her Mobile, Alabama
church upbringing as having the most influence in her musical background.
Sabrina Rose, known as "Rose," born and raised in the concrete jungle
of NYC credits her love of hip-hop and Jamaican heritage with influencing
much of her early years.
When asked to
describe their combined musical style, these ladies agree that their music
is fluid, and not true to just one music genre. "Just when you think
its hip-hop, it's reggae. Just when you wonder if it's reggae, it's rock.
As soon as you think it's rock, it's soul," says Rose, who credits a
local band's jam session with bringing the two together. Their palate of musical
inspirations seems to reflect their musical prowess-the ladies admire legends
like Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald as well as modern day divas Mary J. Blige
and Nikka Costa.
Although the
group title comes from their lifelong nicknames, the name Slick & Rose
reflects more of an attitude-enhanced ambiance than a cutesy cliché.
"We create an atmosphere that people get lost in-an experience of 'street'
mixed with 'sweet," says Slick. The edgy, urban tracks laced with hardcore
beats and hypnotic melodies they have created reflect their chameleon-like
style.
Although this
duo is new on the scene, they have already collaborated or shared the stage
with noted performers such as rap sensations, Phife (A Tribe Called Quest),
Common, Slum Village, underground diva, Joi, as well as acclaimed poet Jessica
Care Moore. Now making a mark in Atlanta, Georgia, Slick & Rose finds
themselves performing at such venues as Earthlink Live, Georgia World Congress
Center, Apache Café, The Cotton Club and the "Historical"
Royal Peacock.
Definitely the
most creative example of "North meets South," Slick & Rose is
just the ear candy you need. Get yourself a dose of this raw sugar.
