When you hear
the phrase "Bigheaded Girl," what do you think? Well, after one listen to
the debut album by Delilah Harris you will think soul, passion, poetry and
love. Delilah Harris is the next big thing. She blends poetic and deeply personal
lyrics with great music and real vocals (a rarity today).
Raised in Louisiana, her down south roots are clearly a big influence on her
music. Breed on the music of the legends (Diana, Barbara, Sam Cook, The Temptations
and Aretha) music became a major part of her life early on. As a child she
would listen to their records, sing along and dream of making it big. Delilah
studied music through out High School and made All State for four years. After
High School she was struggling with the idea of moving to New York to pursue
her music full time. To her New York meant Broadway, lights, camera and action.
This was the place where she knew she would make something big happen. After
a chance meeting with Lady Bug of Digable Planets, she was presented with
the opportunity to move to New York and work with the group. Now what young
talented girl would pass this opportunity up?!
And so Ms. Harris
made the move to NY and after a short period of working with Digable Planets,
Delilah kept a nine to five to play the bills while pursuing a solo career.
Not long after Delilah met a group of musicians and writers that go by the name
Funknstuff Productions. Funknstuff have already found success with their work
with Sade, Will Downing and Keith Sweat. Delilah liked the fact that these guys
were real musicians and that the tracks they create are full of live instrumentation.
And they were able to recognize her talent miles away. And so Delilah and Funknstuff
Productions became a team and started working on some new material. And the
result of these sessions is the masterpiece, "Bigheaded Girl."
The songs on "Bigheaded
Girl" vary in style. From the flirtatious and sexy "Slow But Sweet" and Bud,"
to the Inspirational "Don't Be Sad," the deeply personal and introspective "Lessons
In Life" and "Woman" and emotional songs about love such as "Day" and "Just
Go." This album offers a little something to satisfy the ears, hearts and minds
of all listeners. The next step after recording the songs was deciding what
to actually do with them.
With a great album Delilah and Funknstuff weighed the many options and decided
to team up and form an indie label, Paper Noted Records, and release the CD
on their own. With the power of the Internet the CD has been made available
for all around the world. But Delilah is not just a studio singer. To help promote
her CD, Delilah has performed at many venues in New York and Philly. Her performances
have gotten rave reviews and she gains new loyal fans with every show.
Currently Delilah
is working on her sophomore album as well as performing select shows and enjoying
a little down time. Delilah likes to go by the waterfront which offers the view
of New York City, near by her NY home, and sit there with some coffee or tea
or lay back and write while taking in the beautiful view. Delilah also enjoys
going to plays, book shops or even hanging out home watching a movie or working
on her new love, painting. Some of Delilah's favorite movies are Terms of Endearment,
Scarface and Menace 2 Society. Some of her favorite artists to listen to are
Jill Scott and Angie Stone as well as records by the artists which influenced
her growing up (Aretha, Gladys Knight, etc.).
Five years from now Delilah would like to see herself still doing music, perhaps
having released 5 albums or so. She would also love to perhaps do a play, continue
painting, write a book or maybe even work on a coffee table book. But number
one for Delilah is doing what she loves, which is being creative. Music will
always be her passion and her sophomore promises to be creative, innovative
and different from her last.
With the talent, drive and passion that Delilah Possesses, good things are destined
to come. Keep your eyes and ears out for Delilah, you never know what you will
catch her doing next. But definitely keep supporting this rising star. "Bigheaded
Girl" is only the beginning.
