If you're like
me, when you think of cities that our Soul Artists are rising from, you think
of cities like Philly, Atlanta, New York, Dallas, and such. Never does it
cross your mind that cities like Cleveland, Ohio serves as home to an up and
coming artist that is creating a Soulful buzz. I know Ohio had the spirit
of soul music considering it's home for The O'Jays, The Ohio Players, Bobby
Womack to name a few, but the spirit has awakened. The energy has been rejuvenated
cause CONYA
DOSS has released her powers. Conya Doss is an artist that sings on hot
tracks, writes, produces and gives a dynamic performance. Starting off as
a teacher for the Cleveland Public School System, she decided to step out
on faith and pursue her musical dream. Her debut CD, A Poem about Ms. Doss,
which she co-wrote and co-produced, is a breath of fresh air. Her style is
original yet puts you in the mind of soulful legends. Her messages are emotional,
inspiring, and motivational. You won't be skipping any tracks on this CD.
I was so impressed
by her songs, that I had to introduce her to the Jodine's Corner Community.
I introduce to you, Ms. Conya Doss:
JC:
Conya your music is amazing and your lyrics are powerful. Who were some of
your influences in music?
CD: I enjoy listening to a variety of
music genres. Therefore, my influences range from Bonnie Raitt, and Steely
Dan, to Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Donny Hathaway, and Angela Winbush.
JC:
What was your inspiration/motivation to step out on faith and pursue your
dream in music?
CD: I believe that the Creator has given
me a gift to share with the masses. God has given me the opportunity to pursue
and succeed in other areas, i.e. teaching, schooling. I am very blessed. Now
is the time for me to share the gift of music. It's all in the timing. I have
also been blessed to have very supportive people around me. That is always
a motivational tool
JC:
What part did Cleveland, OH play in you developing your craft?
CD: Growing up in Cleveland, I had to
be very creative. This is because Cleveland does not have a lot of places
where R&B is exposed. Therefore, I had to be very creative in using the
tools that were available. Much of my craft was enhanced through singing with
friends in elementary school, and in high school. Also, I come from a family
who loves family gatherings, where everyone sings, or thinks that they can
sing. So much of my craft was developed with the help of my family and friends.
JC:
How is it now being in the "industry" compared to when you were
teaching?
CD: They both require you to be very flexible
and patient. I have to be able to sharpen my craft in both areas, as well
as continuously come up with new innovative ways to keep the audience interested.
They both require a lot of time and dedication.
JC:
What do
you want your audience to remember about Conya Doss?
CD: I would like them to remember me as
"that one who stayed true to herself." I would like to be remembered
as an artist who created her music without compromising her craft for commercial
success.
JC:
Can you share any words of inspiration to those that are traveling that same
path of pursuing their dreams? CD: First
of all, stay true to yourself. Be yourself. Don't compromise yourself, based
on what others think you should do. This is really hard in this industry.
No one knows you better than "you". One had to stay grounded, dedicated
and focused. The Creator will guide you the rest of the way!
JC:
